Malmö Sustainable City Development Conference nov30-dec02

I had the wonderful opportunity to be part of the Harvesting Team during the Sustainable City Development Conference in Malmö. We harvested the Round Table Discussions of the different tracks of the conference and presented them back to the participants in two feedback sessions.

It was some weeks ago when I was offered to join the harvesting team. I was in Austria when my friend called me with the offer and, after a few minutes of on and off connection through Facebook, I was suddenly the graphic harvester of the conference. I had never done such thing and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to practice my graphic recording skills and attend a conference about sustainability.

It turned out to be much more than that.

img_5905I was shaking before the first feedback session that I had to harvest, scared of not being good enough, of what all those important people in suits might think of me, and it wasn’t until I missed the first little detail and drew the not so straight letters that the perfectionist inside me left me alone to enjoy the process and bring the best of me.

The biggest insights came not from the skills of listening and capturing the ideas that were mentioned, but from the valuable connections and conclusions I was able to make from the drawings. The facilitator came to me a couple of times during the sessions to ask me about what I was capturing and, almost unexpectedly, I was able to dissect and sum up the ideas that the different tracks of the conference were exposing.

I know that the drawings were not perfect and that I still have a lot to learn on capturing the main points and visualising the connections between them, but having this experience has given me a lot of confidence and a lot of clarity on the value of graphic recording. I will now take every opportunity I have to practice and to support the conversations that happen around me.

Nationalists.

I was told by a few european friends that I am the only nationalist they like. Immediately I thought, is being a nationalist a bad thing? I have always been proud of it! We, Basque people, are proud of being nationalists. So what is it to be a nationalist?

According to my dictionary, a nationalist is:

  • a person who advocates political independence for a country.
  • a person with strong patriotic feelings, especially one who believes in the superiority of their country over others.

I do agree with the first definition, and I also have strong patriotic feelings, although I do not feel superior to anyone. So, is this last point which gives nationalists the bad reputation?

I personally believe that it is not a bad thing to be proud of one’s country, support it and feel devotion for it. I do feel these things. However, and kind of surprisingly for myself, I feel like this is not the common rule among several europeans. I find it weird, they find me weird… it’s the beauty of diversity.

Perhaps it’s a Basque thing, or a minority thing, or even a pro-independence thing. I don’t know. I just realised that there are quite a few non-nationalists. It’s not a very common thing in my land.

Politika eta politikoak

Duela pare bat aste Per Bolund, Suediako Finantza eta Kontsumo ministroa, unibertsitatera etorri zen aurkezpen bat egitera eta gure klaseari gonbidapen zuzena bidali zigun bertara azaltzeko. Miljöpartiet de gröna, Alderdi Berdekoa, da nahiz eta Gobernuan gehiengoarik ez izan.

Per Bolunden aurkezpena

Aurkezpenean Ekonomia Berdeaz arituko zela esan ziguten, baina denak zur eta lur utzi gintuen saioak. Power Pointeko lehen diapositiban CO2 emisioen bilakaera erakutsi zigun, etorkizunean egin ditzazkegun erabakiek izango duten eragina azaltzen zuen grafiko batekin. Saioa oso interesgarria izan zen. Suediaren egungo egoera ekonomikoa eta ekologikoa azaldu ostean, etorkizunean ekonomiak (Suediakoak eta mundu mailan) eman beharko lukeen aldaketaz aritu zen, ekonomia zirkularra, elkarbanatze-ekonomia eta antzeko kontzeptuak aipatuz.

Ondoren, mundua aldatu nahi bagenuen politikan sartzeko garai egokia zela azpimarratu zigun behin eta berriz. Baina gehien arritu ninduena ondorengoa izan zen: ez zigun esan bere alderdian sartzeko edo azaltzen ari zitzaizkigun ideiengatik borrokatzeko. Eztabaida politikoan sartzea nahi zuen, sinisten genuena sinisten genuela.

Pentsaezina egiten zait Euskal Herri edota Espainia mailan horrelako ministro bat izatea. Gure estiloa bestelakoa da. Politikan zentratu beharrean politikoetan fijatzen gara, ia-ia esaten dutenari kasurik egin gabe. Zuk A badiozu, nola esango dut nik A, zu ezkerrekoa eta ni eskuinekoa izanda? nola ba? honezkero gizartean ere normaltzat jotzen ditugu horrelako argudioak. Nik ordea hau diot, aldaketa klimatikoa edo errefuxiatuen krisia bezalako arazo unibertsalen aurrean, ez al da zentzuzkoena bat etortzea? ez dugu denok iritzi berdina izan beharrik. Noski ezberdintasunak egongo direla batak eta besteak aurkeztutako proposamenetan, baina minimo batzuk ziurtatu beharko ditugu ezta? behin gutxiengo hori onartuta, denbora gehiago egongo da xehetasun eta txikikerietan murgildu eta eztabaidatzeko.

Baina ori ez da gure estiloa. Guk politikoei begiratzen diegu politikari beharrean. Ea noiz konturatzen garen aspaldi pasatako moda dela.

Garapen pertsonala

‘Change makers’ moduan aurkezten  genuen geure burua asteburu honetan Art of Hosting and Harvesting Conversations that Matter (AoH), Karlskrona 2016 ikastaroan. Master hau amaitu ostean  lan bila hasi behar dut, baina nola izan ekintzaile edo aldaketak ekarriko dituen aktore, lehengo paradigmako lanpostuetan trabatu ezkero? sormena erabili beharra daukagu paradigmaz aldatu eta benetan sinesten dugun hori bultzatzeko.

Ni goizeko check-in bat dinamizatzen

AoH ikastaroaren ondoren lehen pausua ematea erabaki dut: bururatzen zaizkidan proiektu, ideia, inspirazio eta pentsamentuak jasoko dituen koadernoa erosi nuen atzo. Nire bidaia pertsonalaren hasieratzat hartu dut erosketa hau. Lanaz, lana bilatzeaz eta gizarteari eskeini nahi dizkiodan zerbitzuei beste ikuspuntu batetik begiratu eta lana diru iturburu izan beharrean nire ekarpen pertsonal moduan ulertzea erabaki dut.

IMG_5065Bidaia baten hasieran nagoela iruditzen zait, burua ideiaz eta proiektuz beteta. Ikaragarrizko esperientzia izan da asteburu honetakoa eta hainbeste pertsona interesgarri ezagutu ostean, niri ere nire tantatxoa emateko ordua iritsi zaidala sentitzen dut. Zarauzko udaletxearekin elkarlanean herri mailako elkarrizketak dinamizatzea, enpresetan iraunkortasun estrategiak bultzatzea, etabar.

Orain Gothenburg-en nago nire Strategic Planning for Sustainability (SPS) asignaturako taldekideekin. Bihar elkarlanean aritu garen Dugges garagardotegian gure proiektua aurkeztu behar dugu 3 hilabeteko lanaren ondoren. Negozioaren norabidea iraunkortasunerantz aldatzeko gomendioak emango dizkiegu, ekintza zerrenda zehatz batekin batera.

What? Where? When?

I am aching, non-stop. I want it, so badly. I cannot think of anything else, I must have it. But what is it? what am I craving for? is it that chocolate cookie? or the beautiful dress I saw in the store this morning? maybe is that new iPhone app that everyone is using now…
I seat still, this is too much, I want to stop thinking and enjoy the day. Today I don’t need to check Facebook or Instagram for beautiful pictures, everything looks stunning under the white snow blanket. I try to capture the beauty in a picture, I want to send a snapchat to my sister to show her the scenery. Should I use a filter? maybe not…
‘Look!! Did you see that?’
I look up but I don’t see anything.
‘There where two deers right there on the shore!’.
‘What? Where? When?’
‘Right there, between those trees. They were beautiful. You missed them’.
‘Ohh… I was taking a picture for my sister. Shit!’

Sounds familiar? We live between ‘I want this’ and ‘I want that’, but we don’t realise where we are, what we have or who we are. LOOK UP, THERE IS A WORLD BEHIND THAT SCREEN. A place where you can find the best music, the freshest air, the most exotic smells and the most beautiful sites. AND EVERYTHING IS FREE!

Call to Earth

pale blue dot.jpg

‘Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there–on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known’.

COP 21ean ia 200 herrialdek sinatu duten klimari buruzko dokumentuan 1,5ºC-tan jarri dute tenperatura igoeraren muga. Nahikoa izango al da?

gogoratu nor garen

Gizartea izugarrizko abiaduran ari da garatzen. Sinestezina da gure belaunaldiak soilik nolako aldaketak ikusi dituen teknologian, globalizazioan edo sare sozialen munduan. Garapen honek gure bizimodua goitik behera aldatu du, baina hobera aldatu al du?

Egia da aurrerakuntza hauek izugarrizko aukerak ematen dizkigutela, komunikazio teknologiek edo garraio sistemak esaterako, baina elkartzen gaituen modura, ikaragarrizko banaketak eragin ditu egungo gizartean.

Perspektiba galduta gabiltza, errealitate paralelo batean, inguratzen gaituen guztia gure zerbitzurako  dagoela sinetsita, Lurra gure etxea dela ahaztuta. Eta bien bitartean, jasangarritasunaz dihardugu, egindako kaltea nola konpondu eta etorkizunekoak nola ekidin pentsatuz. Ez al litzateke hobe lehendabizi nor garen oroitzea?

Jasangarritasun ekologikoaz eta sozialaz hitz egiten dugu, baina ez gara oroitzen gure buruaz. Lanetik, etxera, etxetik eskolara, facebook, telebista, mugikorrak…

Gelditu. Hartu arnas.

Sentitu gorputza. Izan momentu batez, besterik egin gabe. Nor naiz? nola nago?

Irten kalera, mendira edo itsasora. Sentitu haizea eta entzun. Izan momentu batez, besterik egin gabe. Nor naiz? non nago?

Ahaztu egin zaigu nor garen.

Bizitzaren sinpletasunean ez dago jabetzarik, ez kontsumismorik, ez aurreiritzirik edo modarik. Izateko ez dugu askorik behar. Ez dut esan nahi atzera egin behar dugunik edo kontsumitu behar ez dugunik, baina gure bizitzak baldintzatzen dituzten einean, kontziente izan behar dugu sentitzen ditugun ‘behar izan’ horiek ez direla hil ala biziko gauzak.

Horrez gain, natura behar beharrezkoa zaigu bizirauteko, bai baliabide iturri moduan, baita giza bizitza egotea ahalbidetzen duen baldintza moduan ere. Hala, ingurugiro osasuntsu bat izatea lehentasuna bilakatzen da, haren mende baitago gure izatea.

Mundua konpontzeko soluzio bila hasi baino lehen, gogoratu dezagun nor garen, bestela, arazo berdinari bueltaka jardungo dugu etengabe.

‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them’. -Albert Einstein

Arrazoi ugari, helburu bakarra

Lehengo batean klasean, Sarah Denie ekonomialariak emandako ‘Economics and Governance’ saioan:

‘Idatzi paper batean berpizten zaituelako edo sutan jartzen zaituelako aurrera egiteko indarra ematen dizun balore edo kontzeptua.’
Bi multzoak borobilaren erdian genituela, banan-banan bakoitzak berea azaldu zuen. Injustizia, berdintasuna, justizia, genero berdintasuna, bakea, familia, pobrezia… balore gehientsuenak aurreikusteko modukoak ziren. Denak, bat izan ezik. Erdi Kanadarra eta erdi Suediarra den neska baten mezuak guztiok harritu gintuen, ‘noski…’ txiki batek lagunduta. ELURRA zioen bere papertxoak. Etxe deitzen dien bi herrialdeetako identitate eta zeinua den hau galtzear dago aldaketa klimatikoaren erruz eta horixe da egunero jasangarritasunaren inguruan borrokan jarraitzeko duen arrazoi nagusia. Bere herriaren zeinua, bere zeinua, bere identitatea. Zer lirateke Kanada eta Suedia neguko elur mantu zuririk gabe? Zer litzateke bera elurrik gabe?

Zer egingo genuke zarauztarrok hondartza galtzeko arrisku larrian gaudela konturatzean? ez al gaude jakinaren gainean?
